Facebook is currently working on advanced Artificial Intelligence which will allow you to ponder on your decision before uploading potentially embarrassing selfies in situations where you might be….. drunk. This information comes via Wired’s interview with Yan Lecun, an executive who oversees Facebook\u2019s Artificial Intelligence Research lab.<\/p>\n

He described it as ‘an intelligent digital assistant which would mediate your interaction with your friends, and also with content on Facebook’, the AI would basically be there to (virtually) tap on your shoulder and ask you:<\/p>\n

His research is not only limited to this concept but also aims at creating digital assistants which will be able to analyze other parts of your Facebook feed besides photos, which he describes as an ‘AI-complete problem’:<\/p>\n

You need a machine to really understand content and understand people and be able to hold all that data, that is an AI-complete problem.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, he has also hinted that in a distant future, this research could also involve the virtual reality headset, Oculus Rift and has stated that the research team has already talked with the Oculus team about their research and ambitions.<\/p>\n

It is important to note that while Facebook allows you to tag your friends in pictures -a facial recognition feature introduced back in 2010, Lecun admits that some people might not welcome this next step fearing that their photos might be used for advertising purposes. However, he has strongly emphasized that this will grant you more control over your online self, not less and moving forward, it will be quite interesting to see what this research leads to in the near future.<\/p>\n
