{"id":6319,"date":"2014-08-27T12:35:03","date_gmt":"2014-08-27T16:35:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.nccomputertech.com\/?p=6319"},"modified":"2014-08-27T12:35:03","modified_gmt":"2014-08-27T16:35:03","slug":"microsoft-roughly-25000-win8-x-users-see-blue-screens-after-botched-patch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nccomputertech.com\/techtalk\/2014\/08\/27\/microsoft-roughly-25000-win8-x-users-see-blue-screens-after-botched-patch\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft: Roughly 25,000 Win8.x Users See Blue Screens After Botched Patch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span id=\"lblSummary\" class=\"ArticleSummary\">Microsoft says it&#8217;s aware of the problem, but insists it appears to be relatively rare<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The second Tuesday of August &#8212; Aug. 12 &#8212; brought Microsoft Corp.&#8217;s (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/symbol\/MSFT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">MSFT<\/a>) monthly day of patching. \u00a0But the security patch rolled out has caused an infamous Windows crash &#8212; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytech.com\/New+Driver+Tools+Help+to+Prevent+Vista+Crashes\/article2570.htm\" target=\"_blank\">dreaded blue screen of death<\/a> (BSOD) &#8212; to take ahold of some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytech.com\/Microsoft+Rolls+Out+Windows+81\/article33573.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Windows 8.1 PCs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I. A Patch of Trouble<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The error (known more technically as Stop 0x50) reportedly occurred for a small number of users with the following updates:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/2970228\" target=\"_blank\">KB2970228<\/a> &#8211; Non-security optional patch for new Russian Ruble symbol<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/2975719\" target=\"_blank\">KB2975719<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; Patch Tuesday update set (includes KB2970228)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/2976897\" target=\"_blank\">KB2976897<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; Kernel Patch<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/security\/ms14-045.aspx\">MS 14-045<\/a>\/<a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/2982791\" target=\"_blank\">KB2982791<\/a>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Kernel Patch<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The &#8216;897 and &#8216;791 patches modify\u00a0Win32k.sys\/Gdi32.dll, so <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/24hoursupport\/comments\/2dk9o7\/august_windows_update_ms14045_kb2982791_and\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">copying those<\/a> from a working machine of the same version of Windows will negate the effects of those patches (according to Redditors). \u00a0Patch &#8216;228 creates a troubled temporary file called fntcache.dat &#8212; which can simply be deleted to apparently fix that part of the problem.<\/p>\n<div><sub><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/images.dailytech.com\/nimage\/BSOD_in_Windows_8_Wide.png\" alt=\"BSOD on Windows 8\" \/><br \/>\nA Blue Screen of Death on Windows 8.x [Image Source: Wikimedia Commons]<\/sub><\/div>\n<p>Or you can go into your system restore console with a recovery disc and try to remove the problem patches (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/sysadmin\/comments\/2dkc3g\/warning_kb2976897_kb2982791_and_kb2970228_causing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this Reddit thread<\/a> for helpful details). \u00a0But double check &#8212; some users have reportedly only had a single erroneous reboot, while for others the problems are continuous.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft has pulled the patches responsible. \u00a0It is reportedly working on a fix and repost of these updates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>II. How Many is Not Many?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The latest wrinkle comes from a Microsoft Community thread on the issues. \u00a0Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/kurt-phillips\/59\/75a\/872\" rel=\"nofollow\">graphics team engineer\/program manager<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/b\/exchange\/archive\/2006\/11\/17\/kurt-phillips-biography.aspx?id=323\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Kurt Phillips<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/forum\/windows_7-windows_update\/blue-screen-stop-0x50-after-applying-update\/6da4d264-02d8-458e-89e2-a78fe68766fd?page=49\">writes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div><em><em>We&#8217;re working as hard as we can to fix [these issues] and release that fix as quickly as possible, so stay tuned for the re-release announcement soon.<\/em><\/em>Everyone else &#8211; please be aware that the reason we pulled this patch was that IF you ran into the problem specified, it&#8217;s a horrible user experience.\u00a0 We made a fairly invasive change in font handling as part of a security patch and thought we had it tested properly, but there are definitely problems in our test coverage and design process that we need to address.\u00a0 We definitely have lssons to learn from this and we will.<\/p>\n<p>One thing to keep in perspective here &#8211; the actual numbers we get through telemetry (clearly not exhaustive, but definitely representative) are that the failures are only happening in ~0.01% of the overall population.\u00a0 So, about 1 in 10000 machines are crashing. We have an obligation to fix that, and we will because we take that obligation very seriously.\u00a0 If you installed and haven&#8217;t seen a Stop 0x50, there&#8217;s no guarantee you won&#8217;t see one before we fix it, but look at the odds.\u00a0 I think it would irresponsible to say in the security bulletin to not uninstall due to the severity of the problem IF you hit it, but I&#8217;m not uninstalling.\u00a0 You need to make your own decision on that course.<\/p>\n<p>Again &#8211; sorry to put you through this.<\/p>\n<p>Just wanted to clear up some hyperbole &#8211; Microsoft isn&#8217;t crumbling, all our testers weren&#8217;t fired, etc.\u00a0 99.99% success is pretty good in most jobs in this world, but clearly we need to strive for higher.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, I am not the official Microsoft spokesperson on this, just an engineer on a very busy graphics team trying to fix our problem.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><sub><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/images.dailytech.com\/nimage\/Windows_8_Patch_Tuesday_Wide.jpg\" alt=\"WinBeta\" \/><br \/>\nMicrosoft&#8217;s latest Patch Tuesday has caused a lot of trouble for some users. [Image Source: WinBeta.org]<\/sub><\/div>\n<p>Note, he&#8217;s not an official spokesperson. \u00a0<em>Neowin <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.neowin.net\/news\/windows-81-august-update-bsods-affected-less-than-001-of-users\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div><em>You can read his full post below but it has since been pulled from the forums for unknown reasons; likely do to the fact that he is not an authorized spokesperson.<\/em><\/div>\n<p>&#8230;and Myce.com <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myce.com\/news\/windows-8-1-august-update-failure-only-affected-0-01-of-the-systems-72502\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">writes<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<div><em>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/forum\/windows_7-windows_update\/blue-screen-stop-0x50-after-applying-update\/\" target=\"_blank\">original thread<\/a>\u00a0has been removed but we made a screenshot in time.<\/em><\/div>\n<p>&#8230;but that&#8217;s inaccurate, or no longer accurate, at least. \u00a0The post is readily available for viewing as of 8\/24.<\/p>\n<p><strong>III. No, But Really, How Many Users is That?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So, assuming the numbers checked out enough that Microsoft left the post intact despite the coverage (and did not openly contradict it), how many users are affected if 0.01 percent are effected?<\/p>\n<p>Well, at a\u00a0Goldman Sachs (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/symbol\/GS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">GS<\/a>) conference in February, Microsoft executive Tami Reller <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.seattletimes.com\/microsoftpri0\/2014\/02\/13\/200-million-windows-8-licenses-sold-according-to-microsoft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">revealed<\/a> that in 15 months Windows 8 (and its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytech.com\/Windows+81+Will+Be+Free+Microsoft+Holds+Onto+Struggling+ARM+Variant\/article31549.htm\">free upgrade<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytech.com\/Microsoft+Rolls+Out+Windows+81\/article33573.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Windows 8.1<\/a>) had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytech.com\/Windows+8+Passes+200+Million+Sales+Mark+After+15+Months+Still+Trails+Windows+7\/article34336.htm\">moved 200 million licenses<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytech.com\/Amid+WorstEver+Drop+in+PC+Market+Microsoft+Hits+100M+Win8+License+Sales\/article31494.htm\" target=\"_blank\">100 million was hit<\/a> after roughly 6 months).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thenextweb.com\/microsoft\/2014\/02\/13\/15-months-windows-8-sold-100-million-fewer-copies-windows-7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">As noted<\/a> by\u00a0<em>The Next Web<\/em> that&#8217;s 100 million less licenses than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytech.com\/Report+Windows+7+Could+be+the+Next+Windows+XP\/article25495.htm\" target=\"_blank\">the popular Windows 7<\/a> moved in its first fie quarters (~300 million), but then again it&#8217;s 40 million more than the troubled Windows Vista moved in its first 15 months (~160 million <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/us\/windows-history-sales-figure-comparisons,news-11836.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">based on<\/a> Microsoft&#8217;s announced 12 and 19 month totals for Vista).<\/p>\n<p>Another fun fact &#8212; according to Gartner, Inc. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/symbol\/IT\" rel=\"nofollow\">IT<\/a>) and the Interactive Data Corp. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/symbol\/IDC\" rel=\"nofollow\">IDC<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytech.com\/Lenovo+Slides+Past+Apple+to+Claim+3+PC+Sales+Spot+in+US+Posts+Record+Earnings\/article34941.htm\">PC sales<\/a> in July-March were around 240 million [IDC: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS24375913\" rel=\"nofollow\">13Q3<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS24595914\" rel=\"nofollow\">13Q4<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS24794514\" rel=\"nofollow\">14Q1<\/a> \/ Gartner:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/newsroom\/id\/2604616\" rel=\"nofollow\">13Q3<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/newsroom\/id\/2647517\" rel=\"nofollow\">13Q4<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gartner.com\/newsroom\/id\/2705117\" rel=\"nofollow\">14Q1<\/a>], of which about 10 million were Chromebooks or Macbooks according to various sources (Apple, Inc. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/symbol\/AAPL\" rel=\"nofollow\">AAPL<\/a>) earnings, UBS AG (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/finance?q=VTX%3AUBSN\">VTX:UBSN<\/a>) <a href=\"http:\/\/focustaiwan.tw\/news\/aeco\/201407140027.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow\">analyst report<\/a>). \u00a0That means less than 1 in 2 Windows licenses sold in this period were new Windows 8 licenses (like a portion of the remaining 120 million came from OEMs using unsold licenses from the original 100 million Windows 8 licenses).<\/p>\n<p>Anyhow, this indicates a license sell through rate of 11.1 million licenses per month. \u00a0Given Q2 2014 sales came in at 74.4 million (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS24981914\" rel=\"nofollow\">IDC<\/a>) and 75.8 million (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/newsroom\/id\/2793921\" rel=\"nofollow\">Gartner<\/a>) PCs (of which ~ 1.7 million were Macbooks ; 2 million were Chromebooks) in Q2 2014 &#8212; almost the same as Q1, we can assume this sales rate more or less continued. \u00a0So in March-July Microsoft likely moved between 9-13 million Windows 8 licenses a month. \u00a0That would add up to 45-65 million additional Windows 8 licenses sold in the last five months.<\/p>\n<div><sub><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/images.dailytech.com\/nimage\/ASUS_Transformer_Book_Win81_Bay_Trail_Wide.jpg\" alt=\"ASUS T100TA\" \/><br \/>\nAn ASUSTek Computer Inc. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/finance?q=TPE%3A2357\">TPE:2357<\/a>) Transformer Book T100TA 10.1-inch convertible tablet is seen running Windows 8.1.<\/sub><\/div>\n<p><span id=\"lblBody\"><br \/>\nThat gives us an estimate of current Windows 8.x license sales levels &#8212; 245 to 265 million units. \u00a0So 0.01 percent of Windows 8.x licenses &#8212; assuming 90 percent of licenses sold are active &#8212; is around 22,000 to 24,000 users. \u00a0We&#8217;re not saying that many users are affected by the most severe problems, but that gives you a roughly idea of how few &#8212; or how many Windows 8.x users are seeing the dreaded BSODs, according to official estimates from Microsoft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Oct. 2013 was the decade anniversary of Microsoft&#8217;s first Patch Tuesday, a program launched two years in to the XP era to try to improve adoption rates of security patches. \u00a0As <em>Softpedia<\/em>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/news.softpedia.com\/news\/Microsoft-s-Patch-Tuesday-Turns-10-A-Decade-of-Botched-Updates-and-Broken-PCs-388580.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">tribute piece<\/a> from last October hints at, this is hardly Microsoft&#8217;s first Patch Tuesday faux pas &#8212;
